Summer cocktails

14 August, 2011

Summer isn’t over yet; in fact here in Greece most people are taking their summer leave near August 15th, which is a national holiday (August 15th is one of the biggest holidays in Greece, as it’s the Assumption of Mary according to Christians).

This post isn’t about fashion but it has to do with one of my passions. That is summer cocktails. Not only do I like drinking them, but I also love making them. That’s something that I “inherited” from my father. He always liked to have all possible drinks at home, so he could make cocktails and other drinks for his friends. This way, everyone would be happy.

Today, I’ll write about my favourite kind of cocktails, sweet ones! Basically, margaritas but with a twist, making them more close to my personal likings.

If you are under-aged, this is not a post for you!

Basic Margarita Recipe (not pictured-altered to fit my likings!)

Instructions: In a cocktail shaker combine all ingredients with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a salt rimmed stemware or Martini glass. Garnish with a slice of lime.

2 oz. tequila

2 oz. Cointreau

3 oz. lime juice

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Strawberry Margarita

Using the Basic Margarita recipe, use again 2 oz. Tequila, 2 oz. Cointreau, 2 oz. of lime juice this time and add some fresh strawberries (or strawberry juice if you like – about 3 oz. of it). Instead of salt, use sugar to rim you glasses. Garnish with a strawberry or a slice of lime again.

Left: Strawberry Margarita (pictured in a Martini glass), right: Mojito.

Cocktails and pictures by me.

Red Grapefruit Margarita

Use the same recipe of Strawberry Margarita, but instead of strawberries use fresh red grapefruit juice (3-4oz.). Strain into a sugar rimmed stemware or Martini glass. Garnish with a slice of red grapefruit.

Red Grapefruit margaritas (and yes that’s my old cell phone in the pics-really old one I know)

Blue Margarita (not rimmed)

2 oz. Tequila

1 oz. Cointreau

1 oz. Blue Curacao

3 oz. Lime juice

Strain into a sugar rimmed stemware or Martini glass. Garnish with a slice of orange.

Blue bicolor Margarita (inspiration of the moment)

Using exactly the same recipe as above, add a splash of grenadine slowly into the glass after you pour the drink.

Rim and garnish any way you like.

Here, pictured garnished with a slice of red grapefruit.

The grenadine gives the margarita, a sweeter taste and a beautiful bicolor effect (deep red and blue).

Moving on to my second favourite cocktail, also made frequently by me for my guests, the Cosmopolitan cocktail.

Use:

2 oz. Vodka 40%

2 oz. Cointreau

1 oz. lime juice

4 oz. Cranberry juice

This is again, a variation of the original recipe, altered to fit my tastes more. In this case, sweeter!

Garnish with a slice of lime.

Below, pictured both with a slice of lime and a maraschino cherry. Also, tasty!

Lastly a less favourite and less sweet cocktail which I tried sometimes:

Martini Rosato cocktail

In a shaker combine all the ingredients and strain the cocktail into a short Martini glass.

Use:

2 oz. Martini rosato

2 oz. lime juice

4 oz. pomegranate juice (or cranberry juice if you prefer)

Garnish with slices of lime.

Of course, drink responsibly! Those sweet cocktails can make you feel tipsy in no time.

These were my favourite cocktails, mostly preferred during summer to cool those hot days and nights. Have you ever tried any of them? Tell me your opinion below.

  1. Oh, today (it’s 00:25 AM here now, Aug 15!) is my nameday! And a friend of mine too, so I have to write her – I believe you have some friends with the same name too!
So we have one more thing in common, sweet cocktails! I love strawberry Margarita and everything that is sweet – Mojito, Bailey’s, Martini Bianco…!
Yesterday it was hot here, but I am sure not like in Greece – now we are waiting here for boots and jackets… cause it started to get colder and colder in the evenings… so, enjoy your summer there, and the holidays!!! Filakia polla!

    • I’m sorry for the late reply Denise mou! I hope you’ll accept my belated wishes for your nameday! So, Happy nameday to you…. My vacations have made me completely crazy. I’m running all the time to complete the things I have to do, both for my blog and my personal life. For example I had to read almost 400 new posts from the blogs I follow on Bloglovin, when I got from my vacation, and yes I read them all, and they kept me back from being properly functional.
In Greece it’s still pretty hot, with rain showers from time to time, to cool the atmosphere a bit. But I think that from now on it will start cooling a lot. No more trips to the beach for me.
      Kisses!

  3. Hi, I was just wondering where I could find the glass you have in the picture for the Martini Rosato cocktail? My mom has been trying to find them for a while and her birthday is coming up so I would like to buy them as a gift. Thank you!

    • Hi Audrey! Unfortunately I can’t help you, as the Martini glass came with the Martini Rosato bottle, as a gift. I only have that one, and I haven’t found any similar ones anywhere. I hope you find the ones you’re looking for.
