How to get loose curls without using a curling iron

9 January, 2013

Around the end of October, I had made an outfit post in which I had loose curls, and the sweet Stephanie, from Absolutely Fuzzy, asked me for a tutorial. It took me some time to make one, because I didn’t have someone to take the photos for me, but I did the best I could to show you how it’s done. It’s actually really easy, and I’m sure many of you have tried it before….

This photo is obviously an old one, but I think that this is the best result I ever had with this method. It really depends on many things, and sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes not so much. Let’s get started!

My first step when I get out of the shower is to put Hi Gloss serum on the ends of my hair. I use Satinique Hi Gloss Serum by Amway, which is infused with Ceramide.

I only need 2 drops of the serum, for my hair, but I have a lot of hair so you can use more or less, if you prefer.

The Hi gloss serum with ceramide, repairs, strengthens and protect my hair….It also makes them soft and shiny. I always use mine on wet hair because it’s really oily.

The next step is to use a color (if you have dyed hair) and heat protector, if you’re going to use a blow-dryer. I use the color and heat protector of Satinique by Amway.

I spray it a few times on my hair, but not too close to the roots, to avoid making them oily. I don’t always use a heat protector, but now that I’ve dyed my hair red I really need it, because I lose some of its color every time I shower.

After that, I slowly start blow-drying my hair. As you can see it’s naturally wavy, but not curly. It used to be really straight when I was younger. I actually leave it in its natural style most of the times, even though it looks straight in photos. The front parts always end up straight, and if I do some combing, it can be straight enough, in no time.

The last couple of years I use my Satinique by Amway blow-dryer, as I always blow-dry them after showering. Not that I like to do it, but I really need to, because of my really dry skin. If I don’t, it starts itching like crazy. Something I learned over the years.

Somewhere in between blow-drying, I use some curling mousse on my hair. This is a really old one I have by Organics, called curl boosting mousse. I don’t usually use many styling products. I prefer to leave my hair natural…But sometimes it’s unavoidable.

I use a small quantity of it on my hair, avoiding the roots as much as I can. You can put it on the roots too, if you want more volume. I find it’s better to use the mousse when my hair is damp enough, but not wet. After that, I continue blow-drying them until they’re almost completely dry.

I divide them into 2 sections (you can do 3 or 4 if you prefer; it will give you curlier hair). You don’t have to care about their parting.

Twist the first section, and create a small bun on your head. Then, use an elastic band, to secure it on top or in the back of your head, as shown on the GIF above. I thought it would be easier to show you the whole process, without making this post picture loaded.

Do the same thing to create a small bun in the back or on top of your head with the second section. Secure it with an elastic band.

After this step, I usually go to sleep and see the result the next day, when they are dry and ready. But if you’re in a hurry, or if you prefer it this way, you can use more curling mousse on your hair, blow-dry them until they’re completely dry, and then untie them to see the result.

This is my final result, but as you can see it wasn’t as successful as the one in the first photo. It happens! But I still got some nice waves for the day. Don’t forget to put some hairspray on, to keep your curls or waves intact for the rest of the day.

I hope you enjoyed reading this tutorial. It took me a while to make, and I did my best to have a good result with the photos. It would have been easier if I had a “photographer” to help with the process, or if I could make a video of it, but I didn’t. So, I really hope you appreciate my effort on creating this simple tutorial. I’m no way an expert; it’s just something I have been doing for years without having watched a tutorial. But I’m sure there are many others out there.

  1. Ah, thank you so much for this post! I’ve actually been doing something similar in that if I don’t have time to curl my hair with tongs/rollers, I will just blow-dry it, then put it into a bun and leave it while I do my makeup etc. When I take it down I get big, loose waves, which are better than nothing (my hair is poker straight: I can’t tell you how jealous I am of your natural waves!), but not nearly as nice as yours. I don’t know why it never occurred to me to use a couple of smaller buns rather than one big one, but I will definitely be giving this a try: it really looks fantastic!

    • You’re welcome! 🙂
I was doing the same thing, putting it into a bun to get loose waves, but I noticed that while one side had great curls, the other one was less curly. So I decided to try with 2 buns instead of one. I’m actually going to try 3 or 4 next time. It should be even better. Although, this time the result wasn’t that successful.
Thank you so much! Most of the times, they stay wavy on the back, but they’re really straight at the front. It’s weird. I used to have really straight hair when I was younger.

    • Thank you! Yes, it’s really simple, and I do it from time to time, to get loose curls. It’s easier than using a curling iron, but it needs more time, and it doesn’t always have the same result.

  4. Thank You for your great tutorial. The biggest problem for me is to keep curs stay, because my hair is long and heavy and maybe because in Ireland is so humid my curls straighten up in hour 🙁 Haven’t found products which hold them nicely.

    • You’re welcome! I know what you mean because the humidity in my city is also crazy…Maybe you should try putting more products, like curling mousse and hairspray to keep them for more hours.

Great post, love the color of your hair and the result is amazing! If course my hair is thin and flat/straight, so I don’t think I would get the same result!

    • You’re welcome Stephanie! 🙂 My pleasure!
Thank you very much! I hope it works for your hair too! Just use some styling products (mousse and hairspray) if you hair tends to stay straight.

  8. Do you home color? If so, what’s the brand and shade? It’s gorgeous. I have naturally red hair but I want to darken it 🙂

    • Thank you! Yes, I do now, but this post was done when I had just started dying them red, and this color was done at a salon.
I currently use no. 6.77 by Igora Royal. It’s the darkest shade of copper red the brand has. Take a look at my latest outfit posts or my Instagram account to see how it looks. Although it currently needs to be freshened up again.
